The Pharmacy department has a 'state of art'
set up. It has grown in stature with each passing year since its inception. It has built
up the reputation of well organised woking setup, up-to-date records, spontaneous service
through hard working and dedicated staff.
The Pharmacy department of Government Medical College Hospital is fully responsible
for the complete charge of Drugs and Dressing material of the Hospital and all the related
matters.
The department is comprising broadly of the following sections:-

SALIENT FEATURES
The drugs and dressing material received in
the Receipt Section are critically examined for quantity, quality and specifications with
no comprise done on account of quality, quantity, shelf life, stamping of stocks, packing,
breakage, short supplies etc. and it is ensured that all the terms and conditions of the
S.O. are met.
Bulk Store for I.V. Fluid and
Dressing Material are separately maintained with the best possible storage
arrangements, installation of Multifels Rack Storage Unit is under
process
Pioneer institute to use sophisticated Compactor
Storage System Units for the storage of Drugs and dressing material in the drug
Stores of the Pharmacy Department, which has guaranteed complete security, better check,
control and protection from dust, moisture, pests etc.
The drug store maintain the most optimum
storage condtion for the drugs, with no compromise at any level to provide the quality
drugs for the best patient care in the hospital.
Well devised Coding System
is used for the drugs , which is unique in a way that a glance at the drug code displayed
on the Compactor Storage Unit will give consolidated information details regarding its
dosage form, specifications, Date of expiry, batch number, stock in hand , buffer stock,
etc. to the dealing Pharmacist ; despite of keeping it completely confidential, thus
pilferage and obliged indents are not existing in the hospital.
In addition the Card System,
indicating the details of the Stock position as on a day, Batch No., Expiry date is
adopted, the card is displayed inside the Compactor units on each batch of a particular
Drug stored, for quick insight to the available stocks.

Maintenance of 3 months Buffer stock of all
the Life Saving drugs at all the times in the stores.
Successful implementation of Approved
Essential Drugs List in the hospital on the pattern of WHO Essential Drug List.

Up to date Records
The regular indenting system is very well
planned and strictly followed for its proper implementation. Weekly indenting time tables
are issue to all the wards. Nursing sisters of different wards and areas have to maintain
the weekly inventory of drugs required in their wards. The delivery of duly filled and
time indents are done by Pharmacy department, from the hospital issue counter.
Well informed staff with the knowledge of
latest developments in the field. Technically qualified , registered, hard working
Pharmacists with ready to serve approach.
Co- ordination and closely knitted
association with the Medical/ Paramedical / Nursing staff with the identical motto to give
the best service to the ailing.
For the procurement of drugs annual
requirement indent is generated from the pharmacy for implementing a proper procedure.
Regular track of sources approved by drug
committee and performance of their products are maintained by the pharmacy for the
consideration and decisions of the Drug Committee.
The Approved list of Drugs
of GMCH, Sector 32, Chandigarh, in the concise form with complete details is available to
all the medical/paramedical professionals of the institute in the form of a "Pocket
Booklet" for easy referance and prescription writing to give benefits to
more and more patients from the hospital. The booklet is very well designed for easy
reference.
The "Hospital formulary"
of GMCH, Sector 32, Chandigarh. Including the details of drugs under the headings like
category, specifications, indications, precausitons, contraindictions, side effects, drug
intractions, doses form, over dose etc. shall also be made available fro quick reference
in a short span of time with the joint efforts of the department of Pharmacology and
Pharmacy.
Patient Care Service/ Counseling / Drug
information , imparted to the patients along with the issue of drugs from the OPD Drug
Distribution Center / OPD Pharmacy/ OPD Chest And T.B. Counters under NTCP programme / OPD
Anti Leprosy Drug Distribution Counter under NLEP programme.
Efficient, Well Recognized and Result
Oriented Drug Committee which is responsible for making all the decisions relaetd to drug
strating from, the requirement, identification of sources, procurement and distribution
policies etc.
Well defined and practical Drug Purchase
Policies.
Successful usage of Single
File System = One Drug = One File.The advantage of this single file
system, other than avoiding delays is the each that file is complete in itself i.e. from
generation of an indent for the annual quantity upto the sattelment of the final payment
and all other procedures conducted in between, the details are available in the file in
choronical order.
Strict control and stringent policies /
procedures for the procurement, stocking , verification, distribution and record keeping
etc. observed for the Narcotics/ Excisable items in the hospital, as a result of which,
there is no pilferage and misuse of the narcotics .
Complete Computerization
of the Pharmacy Department is under process alongwith the implementations of developed
software.
The user pharamacist can collect the entire
information about a drug viz; stock position, shelf life, batch number, current
consumption rate , buffer stock to be maintained , expiry date, mode of purchase, sources
approved, indication for the submission of the fresh indent, issuing details and all other
related information about the drug which shall be flashed on the screen.
Overall,it may siad the Pharmacy
department of Govt. Medical College Hospital is develoed on the modren concepts matching
with the tradition of the institution. the process and efforts for further improvement and
more facilieteis still on with continuos uptrend in the working,maintenance and services
for the welfare if the patients.
The department is growing and achieving the
targets with an aim to contribute constructively in the service to the ailing community.
SERVICES
The following services are provided by the
department through its various sections:-
Main Centralized
Drug Stores for hospital supplies:-
Supply / Indent of drugs to various
wards/emergency/Operation theatres/departments of the hospital and college through
Hospital issue counter.
Delivery of drugs to the respective nursing
stations under the direct supervision of pharmacist.
Issue of drugs to the OPD Drugs
Distribution Center and Injection Room.
Drug information to the Nursing Staff,
Para-Medical staff and Technicians.
OPD Pharmacy(Drug
Distribution Center):-
i. Issue of drug
(free of cost ) to the patients attending OPD against the CR. No on OPD card of GMCH-32
Chd.
ii. Counseling/detailing of drugs to the patients by making them aware of proper
usage of drugs and also about Drug
interactions.
OPD Chest & T.
B. Counter:-
Distribution/ Issue of Anti Tubercular
Treatment Drugs (free of cost) to the patient under NTCP programme against the GMCH-32,
OPD card and patient identity & treatment card issued by Chest & TB department.
OPD Anti Leprosy
Drug DistributionCounter under NLEP
Distribution/ issue of Anti Leprosy Drugs
(Free of Cost) to the patients under NLEP programme against the GMCH OPD card
OPD Injection
Room:-
The injections prescribed by the doctors to
the patients attended in various departments of the OPD's of GMCH-32 are injected by the
technically qualified Pharmacist observing proper precautions and procedures.
Dispensing
Services:-
Dispensing services for only the official
preparations ( as per Pharmacopoeias / Official Books) against the formula requisition
received through HOD/ Proper Channel for different departments is provided.
